Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Position Description Title: Music Director

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-Exempt Position

Hours Required: Part-time

Organizational Relationship: Employed by Board of Directors, under the supervision of the Minister

Position Summary: Direct the music program in the church. Working closely with the minister, Worship Team and Music Committee, the Music Director provides both choral and piano music for Sunday and special services and events. The Director is responsible for preparing the adult choir through weekly scheduled rehearsals. The Music Director takes responsibility for the maintenance of the church instruments and assists the church to provide guest musicians and other music resources.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Meet regularly with the minister and Worship Team to plan, select and coordinate music selections for Sunday and special services.

  2. Attend regular staff meetings to coordinate with church staff services to support the music program and regularly schedule music committee meetings. Communicate music information to church administrator and minister.

  3. Play piano at regular Sunday services and special services and events at AUUF.

  4. Ensure a choir performance on average of 2-3 times a month for regular Sunday services, excluding summer months.

  5. Can be available to perform for weddings, memorial services and other religious rites of passage conducted at the church. If not available, work with minister to locate a substitute.

  6. Conduct adult choir rehearsals.

  7. Makes recommendations for hire and supervises an accompanist for the choir.

  8. Arrange for piano tuning and manage the general maintenance of musical instruments owned by the church as needed.

  9. Purchase selected music, organize and maintain the music library

  10. Assist in hiring or enlisting all guest musicians for Sunday services and special services in coordination with the minister and the Music Committee.

  11. Be responsible for all ancillary music equipment, making certain music stands and other equipment are properly set up and stored after use.

  12. Maintain professional membership with the Association for Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries (AUUMM). Participate in regional UUA programs and meetings.

  13. Recommend and manage music budget.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or specialized music training.

  • Experience as an assistant music director or music director for a church or experience as a choral director.

  • Professional-level piano skills.

  • Broad knowledge of religious, classical and other appropriate music genres.

  • Strong communication skills & ability to work in a variety of group settings including group meetings & rehearsals.

  • Must be able to lead, teach and train adults.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must have the following physical abilities: traverse the church campus including the use of stairs, sit and stand.
